Field in the “Greatest Cup Never Run” released

Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter had an unenviable task when selecting the field in the Greatest Cup Never Run.

Carpenter described the task as “most challenging.”

The end result is 24 of the greatest Melbourne Cup winners together in one fictional race.

1930 Melbourne Cup winner Phar Lap was given the top weight of 60kg, just ahead of 1890 winner Carbine (59kg) and triple Cup winner Makybe Diva (58kg).

The race is sure to create plenty of discussion over the next 97 days, with a digital simulation being prepared for Melbourne Cup day.

This is sure to be the perfect lead up to the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup.
